ultramarathon

went to dr william tan's ultramarathon today. ran 11 rounds in total! yay, and some more mostly on the outer lanes.

dr tan was in lanes 1-3, and he did 607 rounds in total! wow

so muddy needs to study like 30+ chapters and 250 idioms in 2 weeks. so that's 3 chapters and 20 idioms a day.

and prelims are on 12 sept. assuming all the sec 4 stuff is studied, there's about 5 weeks. so 5 weeks to learn the sec 1 to 3 stuff. which is a total of almost 100 chapters and luckily, the same 250 idioms. so that's about 3 chapters a day.

and of course, there's exams from august 25 to 2 sept. and those things need to be studied for as well.

and hcl o levels at end oct. if we look at the big picture, that's 3 months. so 135 chapters, 250 idioms, compre, letter, composition, some other misc stuff. so minimum must study 1 chapter a day and 2 idioms a day. wheeeeeeeeeeeeeee

luckily, xiuhuan and muddy coutned all these today, 25 july. so there's time for us to study. wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

ndp yesterday. same food as the first session muddy went. hopefully, this means next week's s pizza hut. ahahahhaha

javine and muddy were talking about how we eat "rounds of food" instead of meals.

haha, see, first the average rgs kid wakes up around 6am. then most eat breakfast (unlike muddy), then there's recess around 9am. and on some days there's lunch at 12+. and sch ends at some super weird timing. so see, the whole bio clock is messed up. ahahahah

wheeee, that's another reason to put the 8 day cycle back. sch ended at a fixed time, was it 1.50 or 2.15? so there was some decent time for lunch before cca. now it's quite weird. 1.20 is too early, then cca can't be carried out until 2.30 or 3, then 3pm is too late, cca would start around 3.30 and end very late.

so there, another reason for 8 day cycle. wheeeeeeeee

hm.. let's see, muddy doesn't eat breakfast, sometimes recess if muddy's free and lunch is sleeping time. then reach home around 5+ or 7+ if there's meeting or cca. and that's muddy's favourite "round of food" ahahahha,

cornflakes, peanut butter and bread, chin chow, raisins, basically lots of rubbish, ahahahahha

then dinner at 7.15.

and at 9 plus, it's another round of food to keep awake for the night. ahahahhaha

and muddy's eating chin chow now. it's super nice. wheeeeeeeeeeee

and muddy has a new theory. wait, did muddy mention this already? if u stand in the sun, u will abosrb the solar energy. so it's like charing batteries. ahahahhahaha

and muddy thought of the perfect career path.

study till 20 or so and get all the kayaking and adventure certs
go for ironman langkawi (ahahah, this is part of the career path)
then go join commandos or divers until 40 max.
then join obs and torture little secondary school kids.
then at age 50 or so, come back to rgs and be principal.

it's the weekend again. muddy just drowned in chin chow. wheeeeeeeeeeeeeee, getting ready for tmr ndp parade.

since muddy has more time this weekend, muddy will attempt to clear all evil thoughts. sunday is declared as exercise day. muddy will exercise until flat.

Hi people, this post is just for muddy to unload stuff from muddy's head.

wheeeeeeee, muddy stumbled onto joohui's blog. it is super cool. muddy always wondered if muddy was alone and today, muddy found the answer. no. muddy has found inspiration and strength to chiong for the next 3 weeks, and even beyond.

let's start with sec 1 year. (warning, this will take long)

Muddy came into RGS 3 years ago, lost and confused like any sec 1. CCA orientation. perhaps the best thing that happened. Maybe it's because our batch is "the batch that cannot study", that's why we all chiong so hard for our ccas, unlike what' happening now. somehow, muddy signed up for ncc under the persuasion of then lance corporal xin rong, who happened to be my psl. i don't remember seeing much of the booth. just some badges, some tents and demo, an m16 handled by sir eugene and Mdm si ying and the most impressive part. the arms drills. yes... back then, it was WAH, nowadays, people just run away.

then the ncc orientation. We came to school specially on a saturday. waited at the amphi. at least 18 of us came in total. muddy had signed up for basketball too and was harbouring the intentions of joining both ccas. somehow, muddy figured that muddy wanted to be active in cca. anw, muddy was so captivated by ncc then basketball tryouts flew out of muddy's head.

and there we were. 4 of us from 104. carmen, javine, sherlyn and me. strangely enough, we were sitting in 4 different corners and belonged to 4 different cliques in the class.

and somehow, ncc brought us together. we were then known as the ncc people. "hey, the 2 of u go and join the ncc people" or "the ncc people will do this"

magic? nah, it's the company spirit.

and we went through part a year together. all the hell trainings, where you get so exhausted you go out for lunch after a training on saturday, reach home, collapse on the bed or sofa and wake up the next morning unable to move. in btc alone, we ran up and down the stairs more than 15 times in 2 days and 1 night. and part a camp, wow, that was hell. up and down the stairs more than 30 times in 3days 2 nights. ran 2 rounds outside school in no.4 and the freakin boots were heavy, even though they were just jungle boots. imt, shooting, trainfire, learning how to handle the m16, all the millions of pushups and jumping jacks, cheering our guts out...

who says ncc is just some siao lang doing siao things? rgs ncc is certainly nothing like that. every moment was precious, each became a fond memory. all the stupid things we did, stalking our ncos etc. wheeeeeee

and every recess and after school was spent together. sometimes we'll loiter in school for 2 hours to do rubbish. remember the vending machine next to stall 10? yea, that was our favourite place. buying drinks for each other, sitting at territory to rot, freakin out when seniors pass by. that was how muddy spent part a year.

and part b year, what can i say? it has brought us closer as a platoon. all the crap we went thru, another whole year of it. and i'll never forget the date we became part bs. we started calling each other part b, part b, partb. it was this year, which must have shaped our leadership styles. we saw what we shouldn't do and we saw where the company was heading for: disaster. we tried our best, we fought hard, we won the orienteering competition, but all that was not enough.

part c year only toughten us up. did udi course break us? no. did shooting comp break us? no. could anything break us apart? no, somewhere deep inside us, we were all rooted to rgs ncc.

muddy was just this ordinary kid next door in sec 1. ncc has transformed muddy's life. all the leadership training, it's subconcious. we don't plonk it right in front of your face like what the school is trying to do. it's very subtle. simple things like "one volunteer". if no one volunteers, everyone will get it, if u noe what i mean. initiative? confidence? it's an all in one package.

sec 2 year was when things started going haywire for the company. house pracs were changed to saturdays, and our trainings were still on saturdays. muddy belived that a stronger leader would have prevented that from happening. the biggest regret most of us have is not getting involved in house comm. it's a pity, but we made that choice, we gave it up for rgs ncc.

muddy never knew sec 3 year would be so hectic. besides part c year being the chionging year for ncc, muddy was very lucky to be selected as a psl. it wasn't easy balancing all these commitments, but it is possible. sec 3 just flew past muddy, things were going on too fast to stop and think.

then now, muddy's in sln, house games capt, the senior board of psb and volunteer with Special Olympics Singapore. what brought muddy here? rgs ncc. yes, that's the one and only reason. muddy's character was strengthened by rgs ncc.

why did muddy take on so many commitments? for rgs ncc.

muddy has said it many times, but rgs ncc is not just a cca. it's not something that takes up only 3-4 hours of your time a week, it's a 24/7 commitment. everything you do concerns rgs ncc. it's our fine tradition, it's our culture, it's our heritage.

let people get jealous for all i care. we must protect our name. in sch, we fight for ncc, outside school, it's R G S. if the shool ever knew what we did to make ourselves a renowned company in ncc, i'm sure they'll be proud of us. if only thye bothered.

muddy looks at the current state of ccas in rgs and muddy gets very worried. who is left to carry on our wining tradition? somehow, the younger ones don't look promising as a batch. maybe they're some good ones, but that's not enough. the school culture is offcourse now. it's evolving into some weird thing that started since 2003.

our batch of sec 4s, majority of us love our ccas and the school that rgs was in 2002. we're trying to resist, we're trying to change, but it's not working. 1 year of damage takes 3 years to repair. go think about it. if one batch does not stand up for themselves, then everything we have worked for would collapse.

and back to rgs ncc, muddy belives that it's the best thing for building character and developing leadership. if only the school could open its eyes to look. all the school vmg, 4 ps etc, they are all present here, it's just that people choose to ignore what is there and choose what they want to believe from what they want to see.

muddy wonders what the sec 1s think is an "ideal rgs girl". when muddy was a sec 1, muddy thought: first she must excel in cca, then maybe in prefectorial board or peer support board, then house, and community service.

studies? haha, sorry, that was never on muddy's list.

muddy seriously think the sec 1s ideal rgs girl is one who scores a 4.2 out of a maximum of 4.0 for GPA. and it's not entirely their fault. they come in and see how individualistic people can be and all the rubbish happening. prominent people do not set good example for others to follow. they pon cca. what kind of message are they sending to the sec 1s?

no matter what happens, muddy will never forget the wonderful memories rgs ncc has given me. wonderful in this case does not mean pleasant. haha

4 of us went for the selections. 1 couldn't really swim. muddy dragged her along for the 50m swimming test in the open sea.

the rest dropped out eventually, citing their own personal reasons.

did muddy quit? obviously no.

muddy stayed, the only one from rgs and the only school to send one cadet. Almost every saturday afternoon (some consecutive, some alternate), after training when the rest are getting ready to go slack, muddy would zoom off to sembawang sea training centre. that place. yes...

muddy saw how pathetic the human spirit could be and how weak a person was. but muddy manged to find courage within to pull through (literally)

saturday afternoon 2pm, we would be out at the open sea kayaking our guts out so as not to get kicked out. we reach back at 6. dinner, rubbish, supper, sleep. next morning, wake up at 6. Breakfast. out at 7am, kayak till 11.30-12. lunch, go home at 3pm.

reach home piak. wake up in the middle of the night to do work. from 12-4am.

monday, back in school.

this went on for quite a while, like 75 % of the tranings. every time, just kayak and kayak. and this isn't obs where 4 poeple carry a 2 seater. 2 people carry a 2 seater. we get it from the freakin stands and walk. grab your life jack, paddles, wait, raft up, drift, wait, raft up , drift, chiong.

being sunburnt was part of the package. arms hurt like crap, skin stinged from the salt, and filled with anxiety as to whether i would last another week.

we are always taught to dao the other schools and pretend they don't exist and show them that we are the best. perhaps that's the part where the other 3 couldn't take it. muddy literally had to kayak alone although there was someone else in the boat. she's my platoonmate. muddy was angry, but she's my platoonmate. i'm suppose to take care of her but i was freakin angry.

PT. even though normal school training was already hell, ake was a million times worse. did muddy take the weekdays just to rest? no, muddy trained, muddy pushed myself harder and harder. pushups became routine, muddy tried to learn as much as possible from anyone and anything about kayaking. AKe, i love ake, we did 70 pushups at one shot in double quick time. only 10% of the 200+ people could do it. three quarters of the 20 people were marists, some were the land and air guys, and the only girl who lasted was muddy. wheeeeee, muddy is ego.

that's why muddy has so much pride towards rgs ncc. we are the best. and muddy showed them that we are the best.

rike has helped forged many special bonds with other people for muddy. there's the land girls, the bunch of us who slept in the squash courts everytime. huey, elaine, geraldine and yong hui from crescent, steph and eunice, im tong and su ning from sc, zhimin, jing yi, zakira and karima from guang yang. 13 of us.

and the more decent kayaking partners, dean and jonathan.

and of course, the other 150 or so are crap.

and there's marist sea. and 1sg yvonne from east who kayaked with me for most of the ake.

we survived ake.

muddy almsot died. really. twice in fact. once was the dengue fever, hospitalised for the first time in my life since i was a baby. and the second was during the expedition, where we capsized in between the rocks, harbour and ships.

yep, that's why muddy treasures life. haha. wheeeeeeeeee

and after going through so much, well, muddy is tougher (: what doesn't kill you makes you stronger. yea, muddy almost died but didn't ahahahahahha.

and the worst part? the cover page. it's hardcover, but it's white. yea, it looks like the rp prospectus from far. and there are so many sponsers for 2004.

muddy was too dead to blog yesterday.

woke up on sat morning to prepare uniform (again) then went to school to pass sln photos, ssc plaque and orienteering medal for open house. walked around a little. the setup was super elaborate. yea, the school's turning weird. ahh, muddy shan't say too much but well, we are filming this corporate video thingy.

then went for ndp rehearsal. food was good, haha, we ate 2 meals of KFC. got coffee gardenia bun also and H20. wheeeeeeeeeee.

didn't go for ne show again. yea, mdm jennifer made muddy sit out again. nvm, this coming saturday muddy will attend the first and last NE show. wheeeeeeeeeeee

watched the gun salute from our holding area. wheeeeeeeee, it rained in the morning but it became super hot in the afternoon. and the floor was all muddy and gross, not that muddy is gross though.

went back damn late. typed complain letters. ahahahah, just waiting for a chance to send them all out.

yea, talked to ning until too tired. knocked out.

woke up today at 6+. started prepping uniform (again). got ready to go down to SAFTI MI. reached there around 8.30am. waited for quite long.

more staff sergeants and masters came today. had many many parade rehearsals and drank so much water and ate lunch and bread that muddy's memory just dieded.

ncc day parade is freakin freakin worse by a gabillion times.muddy lost counts of the rehearsals, but there was one that started at 1.20 and ended at like 3.20? lol, almost died there.

but, as the clt said, it's your own school flag that you're carrying. so muddy just pia-ed and maintained the high elbow thingy and all the standard stuff throughout the entire day. yea ,muddy's right hand must have gained more muscles. ahahahhaha

third, assign a minimum of one performance task per subject (inclusing non-examinable subjects like PE AHAHHAHAHAH) on thursday afternoon, say 20 minutes before dismissal (AHAHHAHA, AHAHHAHA, AHAHAHAHHA, muddy loves this)

and fourth, the students have exactly what ever is left of the day and tmr morning to PIA all the freakin performance task. You have to submit all your performance tasks to its various venues by 7.20am.

we were given many quotes to choose from during sln and that was the one i picked. and we were given pictures too. the picture u choose was suppose to represent your feelings at that time. muddy chose a picture of dr william tan, the wheelchair marathoner. muddy admires him for his courage. and well, that was what muddy needed the most to stand in front of the whole school and read the ncc day message, the pledge and even the special o announcement.

that friday was the first time muddy ever spoked at the microphone in front of the whole school. so, courage people, courage.

A long time ago, there was this team in rgs. nationals were coming and the captain got injured and couldn't play. it was always their dream to clinch the title and of course, the captain was devastated. so the captain watched the games from the bench and they went into the finals. when they finally won, it really defined how every leader needs a team to carry THE vision.

A leader can dream and think and plan, but the most important part of it all is the team or the people who are in your area of influence.

as handover approaches, it's really a test when u watch your successor perform. not only the successor, but the incoming batch.

for muddy, it would be seeing that the company is at its peak; where they commit to rgs ncc whole-heartedly just like we did and that they believe. it won't be easy, no one said it would be, but leaving behind a legacy (like what the sec 4s in our sec 1 year did) does say alot about your influence as a leader.
